While real estate is, indeed, local, certain home features tend to have universal appeal to buyers. So as you make remodeling decisions, you might want to focus on projects that could pay off the most when it comes time to sell.
The top feature with today’s home buyers is a laundry room. Ninety-two percent of buyers surveyed by the National Association of Home Builders look for one. If you don’t have a laundry room, the cheapest and easiest place to add one is usually in the basement.
Next up is exterior lighting. Ninety percent of home buyers crave the curb appeal provided by spotlights, lamp posts and walkway lighting. Beyond aesthetics, outdoor lighting improves the safety of a home.
Rounding out the top-three features: Energy-efficient appliances. Nine out of 10 buyers want them. Installing energy-efficient appliances sooner rather than later has the added benefit of reducing your own utility bills.
